History & Significance

During King Sverre of Norway's conflict with the Orkney-backed rebel faction, Shetland saw fighting between supporters of the rival parties. The Orcadian earls had backed the losing side at Florvag (1194) and their influence over Shetland was correspondingly reduced. These Norse island conflicts directly shaped the political framework that would eventually lead to Shetland's transfer to Scotland in 1468.
