History & Significance

Raglan Castle, the magnificent seat of the Marquess of Worcester and the wealthiest Royalist magnate in Wales, served as the principal muster point for Welsh Royalist troops raised for the 1645 campaign. The Marquess contributed substantial funds and men to the Royalist war effort. Welsh troops marched from Raglan to join the Royalist field army that was destroyed at Naseby in June 1645. The loss of Welsh troops at Naseby crippled the Royalist war effort in south Wales.
