The Battle

History & Significance

After killing Oswald at Maserfield, Penda ravaged Northumbria and even tried to burn Bamburgh by piling driftwood against its walls. The wind changed and the attempt failed, interpreted by contemporaries as miraculous intervention. The siege shows Penda trying to destroy the Northumbrian heartland but lacking the capability to take fortified strongholds.
