History & Significance

In August 1642 the mayor of Canterbury attempted to enforce Parliament order suppressing Christmas observance; a Royalist mob rioted and seized the city magazine, declaring for the king. The riot foreshadowed the deep Royalist sympathies in Kent that would explode in the Second Civil War of 1648.
