History & Significance

In the same campaign season as the Battle of Maldon, Danish forces also struck at Folkestone, Dover, and Sandwich. The Chronicle notes ravaging of Folkestone before the fleet moved to the Blackwater. Dover suffered particular damage. These south coast raids were part of coordinated Second Viking Age pressure when large Danish fleets under professional commanders systematically extorted tribute from English coastal towns.

Forces Involved

Danish raiders: c. 500–1,200. Kent defenders: c. 300–800.
