History & Significance

The final collapse of MacDonald power in Islay came in 1614 when Sir John Campbell of Cawdor besieged and captured Dunyvaig Castle for the government. The MacDonald leaders were taken and executed. Islay was granted to the Campbells. This ended the last major MacDonald lordship in the inner Hebrides and completed the Campbell inheritance of the old Lordship of the Isles territories.
