History & Significance

Danebury is one of the most extensively excavated hillforts in England through Barry Cunliffe work over many seasons. The latest Iron Age horizon shows evidence of disruption and the site appears to have been abandoned around the time of the Roman conquest. Whether this reflects voluntary abandonment or military assault is debated — the Roman advance through Hampshire would have required securing such dominant positions.
