History & Significance

Lincoln was the climax of the Lincolnshire rising. The rebels presented articles demanding the end of dissolution and removal of low-born councillors. Henry VIII replied furiously, calling them brutes. Without siege artillery or experienced leadership the host dispersed, though Yorkshire then rose in a far more formidable muster.
