The Battle

History & Significance

Not all Trinovantes welcomed Roman rule — sections of the tribe resented the establishment of a colony on their sacred land at Camulodunum and the requisitioning of Trinovantian farmland for veteran settlers. Plautius conducted a punitive operation to suppress initial dissent. These grievances were not resolved and festered for sixteen years until Boudicca gave them catastrophic expression in 60 AD.
