The Battle

History & Significance

Pendennis Castle was begun in 1540 and completed around 1544 to form the western counterpart to St Mawes Castle guarding the Fal estuary. Its position on the high headland above Falmouth gave its guns commanding elevation over the sea approach. Pendennis subsequently became the most important military installation in the far south-west and was massively extended in the Elizabethan period when the threat from Spain became acute.
