The Battle

History & Significance

Shane O Neill's destruction of the MacDonnell Scots at Glentaisie in May 1565 and his subsequent diplomatic approaches to France and Scotland created the first serious threat of an Irish-Scottish Catholic alliance against Elizabethan England. The English council feared Shane would ally with Mary Queen of Scots and open a northern front. His raid toward the Scottish border forced Elizabeth to negotiate rather than simply suppress.
