History & Significance

Gruffudd ap Llywelyn — who would later become the only king to unite all of Wales — defeated his rival Hywel ab Edwin at Pencader in Carmarthenshire. Hywel escaped but three years later returned from Ireland with a fleet and was killed in a second battle near the River Towy. Gruffudd's repeated victories against Deheubarth were stepping stones to his ultimate unification of Wales.
