The Battle

History & Significance

After the killing of Æthelred I in 796, Osbald was briefly made king but deposed within forty days. Eardwulf then seized the throne in 796. The rapid succession of kings illustrated the total breakdown of Northumbrian political order. Eardwulf survived longer than most, ruling until around 806, with Carolingian support giving him a measure of stability.
