History & Significance

At Alyth in Perthshire in August 1651, English cavalry under Colonel Alured surprised a gathering of Scottish nobles and estates members, capturing a large number of the Scottish ruling class in a single raid. Those captured included the Earl of Leven, former commander of the Scottish army, and several other prominent figures. The Alyth action decapitated much of what remained of Scottish civil and military leadership.
