The Battle

History & Significance

Ardoch (Alauna) in Perthshire has some of the best-preserved Roman earthworks in Scotland and was occupied in multiple phases — Agricolan, Antonine, and Severan. The site commanded the route north through Strathearn. The complexity of the earthworks reflects repeated refortification in response to attacks. Ardoch was one of the most exposed Roman forts in Britain.

Forces Involved

Auxiliary cohort garrison; relieved and reinforced multiple times
