The Roman fort at Y Gaer (Brecon Gaer) was built for a cavalry regiment at the junction of major routes through the central Beacons. Its construction during the Frontinus campaign represents the transition from active conquest to garrison pacification. The fort controlled the upper Usk and Yscir valleys and could project Roman power across a wide area of highland Wales.
