History & Significance

Before his northward march in September 1066, Harold had worked to secure Northumbrian political support by installing his brother Tostig's replacement Morcar as earl and by marrying Aldgyth, sister of Edwin and Morcar. When he passed through York after Stamford Bridge, the northern earls joined his southward march with their surviving forces. The political groundwork Harold had laid in the north was crucial to the military coalition he attempted to bring to Hastings.
