History & Significance

Athelstan expelled Guthfrith, the Dublin Norse claimant to York, in 927 and took direct control of Northumbria for the first time. Sihtric, the Norse king of York, had died and Athelstan moved quickly to exclude Guthfrith succession. All the kings of Britain — Constantine of Scotland, Owain of Strathclyde, Hywel Dda of Deheubarth, and others — submitted to him at Eamont Bridge. Athelstan was the first to style himself king of all Britain.
