History & Significance

Cromwellian forces constructed a major garrison fort at Ayr in 1652 to control the southwest of Scotland. The Ayr citadel was one of five great earthwork forts built across Scotland by the English occupying forces, the others being at Inverlochy, Inverness, Perth and Leith. The Ayr fort dominated the town and provided a base for operations throughout Ayrshire, Galloway and Lanarkshire.
