History & Significance

The siege of Chester was among the most prolonged and brutal of the Civil War. Charles I watched from the Phoenix Tower as his relief force under Langdale was routed at Rowton Heath. The city starved; by the end citizens were eating dogs, cats, and rats. Its fall gave Parliament control of north Wales routes.
