History & Significance

The Chartist Convention planned a mass meeting on Kennington Common in April 1848 to accompany the Third Petition to Parliament. The government deployed 8,000 soldiers, 1,500 Chelsea Pensioners and 85,000 special constables. The meeting took place but the planned march to Parliament was banned and Feargus O'Connor persuaded the crowd to disperse peacefully.
