The Chronicle records that while building Thelwall on the Mersey, Edward sent another detachment to repair Manchester in Northumbria and garrison it. This was the first explicit English military presence in Northumbrian territory and represented a dramatic extension of West Saxon power north of the Mersey-Humber line. The reference to Manchester in Northumbria suggests the town was considered Northumbrian at this date.
