History & Significance

Between the battles of Auldearn and Alford, Montrose conducted operations through Aberdeenshire and Banffshire recruiting Gordon cavalry and northeast royalists. These operations served both to gather reinforcements and to overawe the Covenanting-leaning magistracy of the northeast burghs. Montrose's presence in force through the Gordon country also prevented the Gordons from defecting to the Covenanting side.
