History & Significance

As part of the coordinated 917 campaign that broke Danish power in East Anglia and the East Midlands, Edward's forces also took Maldon. Combined with the fall of Tempsford and Colchester, Edward's 917 campaign was the most successful series of coordinated military operations in Anglo-Saxon history up to that point, taking multiple fortified boroughs in a single season.
