Malcolm II defeated a Danish raiding or invasion force near Forres in Moray. The town stood at the entrance to the Moray plain from the coast and was a natural defensive position. This engagement preceded the better-known victory at Mortlach in 1010 and was part of Malcolm II's successful resistance to the last major phase of Danish raiding in northern Scotland.
