Before marching on Edinburgh, the Pentland rebels assembled at Ayr in November 1666. The muster swelled their numbers but also revealed their weakness — they lacked artillery, professional officers, and clear political objectives. Moderate Covenanters refused to join. The march to Edinburgh through November sleet and cold reduced their numbers before Dalziel's forces caught them at Rullion Green. The Ayr muster was the high point of the rising.
