The combined defensive system of St Mawes Castle and the Falmouth blockhouse, fully operational by 1543, created one of the most effective artillery traps on the entire English coastline. Any enemy vessel attempting to enter the Carrick Roads would face fire from multiple positions at different elevations and from both shores of the estuary. The system was specifically designed to prevent the use of the Carrick Roads as a base for an invasion force operating against the West Country.
