Belvoir Castle was a Royalist stronghold in the Vale of Belvoir that resisted Parliamentary reduction throughout much of the Civil War. Its commanding position on a ridge made it formidable. Parliamentary forces maintained a long blockade rather than attempting a costly assault, gradually squeezing the garrison. The eventual fall of Belvoir completed Parliamentary control of Leicestershire and cut Royalist communications between Newark and the West Midlands. The castle was slighted after capture.
Parliamentary: Midlands forces maintaining blockade. Royalist: garrison of the Rutland and Leicestershire gentry
