Royalists retook Arundel Castle in December 1643 after Parliamentary attention moved elsewhere. Waller besieged it immediately; the garrison of 1,000 men surrendered in January 1644, starved out in six weeks. Arundel changed hands twice in rapid succession, illustrating the fluid nature of the Sussex campaign.
