The Battle

History & Significance

Egbert of Wessex decisively defeated Beornwulf of Mercia at Ellendun, near Wroughton in Wiltshire, in 825. This battle ended a century of Mercian dominance over England. Egbert then sent his son Æthelwulf to drive Mercian power from the southeast. Within a year Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Essex had submitted and Mercian supremacy was history.
