History & Significance

The final Royalist garrison in England at Pontefract Castle surrendered in March 1649, weeks after Charles I had been executed. The garrison had carried out a celebrated raid capturing Colonel Rainsborough, who was killed in the struggle. The defenders were reportedly deeply shaken on learning the King was dead. Their eventual surrender formally ended all armed resistance in England.
