History & Significance

The construction of Hadrian Wall across 73 miles from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway was carried out by three legions in an actively contested frontier zone. The design evolved in response to threats — milecastles, turrets, and garrison forts added to the original plan. The massive Vallum ditch-and-mound system added behind the wall suggests the construction area itself needed securing against attack from the south as well as the north.
