The Battle

History & Significance

Edward the Elder's reconquest of the Danelaw included the strategic fortification of Hertford. He built burhs on both sides of the River Lea — a sophisticated double-fortification that controlled the river crossing and cut off Danish supply lines south. The submission of the Danish garrison at Hertford was part of the systematic collapse of Danish resistance in the Home Counties as Edward's methodical advance continued.
