History & Significance

Dawley Castle in Shropshire (near modern Telford) was fortified for the king and required Parliamentary reduction in the final phase of the Civil War. The Leveson family, who held Dawley, were prominent Shropshire Royalists. Such house-garrisons proliferated across the Midlands Royalist heartland — the king's supporters fortified whatever substantial buildings they could. Their systematic reduction by Parliament occupied many months of 1645-46.
