History & Significance

The Chronicle and chronicler John of Worcester mention multiple engagements between Edmund Ironside and Cnut in 1016 that cannot all be individually pinpointed. Sceorstan (sometimes identified with Sherston, sometimes with a Worcestershire location) may represent a separate engagement from the Wiltshire Sherston. The extraordinary campaign of 1016 — five major battles in one year — remains one of the most intense in English history.
