History & Significance

Even after Fiach MacHugh O'Byrne's assassination (1597), the O'Byrnes of Wicklow continued to resist English control from their mountain fastness. The Wicklow Mountains — just south of Dublin — remained a zone of Irish resistance that the English could not pacify throughout the Tudor period.
