The Battle

History & Significance

After the northern campaign that broke the Comyns at Inverurie and the MacDougalls at the Pass of Brander, Bruce turned to the south-west. He assigned his brother Edward to conquer Galloway. The McDownalls — who had killed Bruces brothers at Loch Ryan — were relentlessly hunted down. Edward Bruces campaign was brutal and effective: multiple engagements, castle reductions, and the systematic elimination of English-aligned power. By the end of 1308 Galloway was secured. The McDowall chief fled to England and Bruces hold on south-west Scotland was complete.
