History & Significance

The Suffolk Armada muster of 1588 covered a long stretch of North Sea coastline with numerous potential landing beaches. The county trained bands were deployed in a chain of coastal positions from the Naze in the south to Lowestoft in the north. The Suffolk muster was part of the same integrated coastal defence mobilisation that sent the Tilbury army to Essex and the trained bands of Kent and Sussex to their coastal positions.
