The Battle

History & Significance

Between 865 and 870, the Great Heathen Army used East Anglia as its base and supply area for the conquest of Northumbria and Mercia. Multiple raids across Norfolk and Suffolk secured horses, food and silver. The systematic exploitation of East Anglia over these years drained its resources and prepared the ground for outright Danish rule after Edmund's death in 869.
