The Battle

History & Significance

When the Crown failed to honour its promises, tensions mounted. A second meeting at Doncaster ended without resolution; small local risings by Bigod and others gave Henry VIII the excuse he needed. Mass executions followed; 216 rebels were hanged including Robert Aske and Lord Darcy. The failure of the Pilgrimage left Yorkshire deeply traumatised and the monasteries unprotected.
