History & Significance

The rebel Aethelwold, nephew of Alfred and claimant to Wessex, had allied with the East Anglian Danes and led them on a raid into Mercian territory. The Kent levies met them on the return and both Aethelwold and the Danish king Eohric were killed in the fight, though the Danes won the battle. Aethelwold death removed the only serious dynastic rival to Edward the Elder.
