Parliamentary forces conducted a raid near Denbigh in 1644 to test the Royalist defences and disrupt their communications between north Welsh garrisons. The Denbigh Royalist garrison sallied out and fought a running skirmish with the Parliamentary raiding party before returning to the castle. The raid confirmed the difficulty Parliament faced in reducing north Welsh Royalist positions without a formal siege.
