The bridge at Burton-on-Trent was one of the principal crossing points of the Trent and was contested several times during the Civil War. In 1643, Parliamentary forces attempted to cross and were initially repulsed by the Royalist garrison. The bridge\'s strategic importance meant both sides invested effort in its control. Burton Castle was garrisoned by both sides at different periods. The town\'s position between Newark (Royalist) and the Parliamentary Midlands made it a persistent flashpoint.
Parliamentary: Midlands forces under varying commanders. Royalist: Newark-based garrison and field forces
