History & Significance

The Battle of Otford in 776 is recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as a Kentish victory against Mercian forces. The Kentish king temporarily asserted independence from Offan Mercian overlordship. However, the victory was short-lived — by the 780s Offa had reasserted Mercian control of Kent. The battle at Otford, on the Darent valley road into Kent from the north, represents one of the last gasps of Kentish independence before Mercian absorption.
