History & Significance

Ine of Wessex fought Ceolred of Mercia at Wodnesbeorg, Adam's Grave barrow on the Marlborough Downs, in 715. The battle was fought on the ancient ridgeway crossing point. Neither king was decisively defeated and both continued to reign. The battle was one of the key frontier clashes of the mid-Saxon period.
