The Musgrave family of Edenhall and the Cumberland border provided continuous border service to the English West March through the 1550s, serving as deputy wardens, keeper of Bewcastle, and leaders of border levies. Sir Richard Musgrave was the most prominent member of the family in this period. The Musgraves represented the gentry class that actually administered the day-to-day operations of march governance — organising the watches, leading the retaliatory raids, and attending the warden courts — which the great magnates like Dacre nominally oversaw but rarely executed personally.
