The Battle

History & Significance

Edward the Elder invaded Danish East Anglia but his Kentish levies refused to withdraw when ordered. Caught by the Danes, they fought a fierce battle at the Holme. Both sides lost key leaders including King Eohric of East Anglia and the rebel atheling Aethelwold. The Danes held the field but were fatally weakened — Edward subsequently conquered the Danelaw.
