History & Significance

The Wrekin — the great isolated hill visible from much of Shropshire — was the most important hillfort of the Cornovii, the tribe who occupied modern Shropshire, Staffordshire, and Cheshire. Its strategic position and the tribal symbolism attached to it made it a military objective. The Roman advance from their base at Mancetter toward Wroxeter required securing this position. Archaeological evidence shows abandonment of the hillfort coinciding with the Roman conquest period. The Cornovii do not appear in the historical record as a warlike tribe resisting Rome, suggesting negotiated or enforced submission.
