The Battle

History & Significance

The South Gate of Exeter and the hospital precinct outside the walls were the scene of fierce fighting during the rebel siege of 1549. Rebel parties attempted to escalade the South Gate on multiple occasions, and the hospital buildings outside the walls changed hands more than once during the extended siege. The fighting around these southern approaches to Exeter was characteristic of the rebels inability to break through the determined city defences.
