The Battle

History & Significance

During the Catholic earls crisis of 1594, the MacIntosh contingent of Clan Chattan joined the government army under Argyll marching against Huntly and Erroll at Glenlivet. The MacIntosh participation reflected the long-standing MacIntosh-Gordon rivalry in Strathspey and Badenoch — the MacIntoshes saw the government campaign as an opportunity to weaken their Gordon neighbours. After Glenlivet's defeat, MacIntosh forces were among those who pursued and harried Gordon stragglers through Strathspey. The episode reinforced the pattern of clan alignments in the northeast, where anti-Gordon sentiment consistently expressed itself through support for government operations.
